Camera problems in barcode question

The barcode capture worked very well in earlier versions of the field app of Survey123. Since the last release  all of our Android users (15 people using various phone firms such as LG, Samsung, Xiaomi) experience difficulties using the camera in barcode question. The camera is jumping, stuck and do not focus well which makes the reading of the barcode very difficult. Please note the it is not a problem of the actual readiability of the bar-code but the capture with  the camera. In the application leaving only code 128 improves the situation but does not solve it.

In Iphones everything works smoothly.

Are you familiar with the problem? Is there any workaround to solve it?

Thanks

Hi Laor and Guy,

Yes, we are aware of some barcode scanning issues that some Android devices are experiencing. We have an open issue to investigate this so will keep you posted once we have a fix. We have seen that some cameras are not focusing properly and the refresh rate is very slow.

Can you confirm if it was working ok in 3.3 release, and is it just 3.5 that has issues on those same devices?

Phil.

Hi Phil

Thank you for your prompt response.

I confirm that the barcode scanning was working perfectly on earlier releases on the same devices that experience the problem with the 3.5 release.

We are working daily with the barcodes in the field and the camera-barcode issue is very annoying. Many times we need to type the barcodes, which prolong the survey process and inserts typo mistakes.

We really look forward for a quick solution.

Hi. This issue should now be addressed with 3.6. Otherwise please let us know.

Hi Ismael,

Thanks for your response.

Indeed, after the 3.6 release, the barcode issue has been solved and barcode capturing has worked very well on the android devices. However since the last minor update on the 17th of October again we experience major difficulties in capturing barcode in the Survey123, in situations that worked perfectly in the past. Many times focus is not achieved and the barcode is not captured, so we need to type it manually.  By the way using the Collector on the same devices the barcode capture is smooth and fast. The repeated problems with the barcode reading using Survey123 on android devices is annoying and makes it difficult for us to implement and expand the use of the application among our field teams.

Hi Laor,

The minor update to the Android build (3.6.157) on the 17th October was to fix the image gallery not being sorted correctly. There were no other changes to the app in any other areas. Therefore the barcode scanning should be working exactly the same when compared with the released 3.6 version (3.6.153) from late 26th September.

Did anything else change on the device, OS upgrade or other settings changes? Are you using the 32-bit or 64-bit Android version? What is the make/model/OS version of the Android devices you are using?

Also, we now have the latest 3.7 beta builds available via EAC, if you have time would you be able to install and test 3.7 beta on the same devices and let us know if the barcode scanning is working ok with those builds, both 32-bit and 64-bit?

Regards,

Phil.
