Schema for Symbology?

So I'm working with a GIS system that needs to be accessed from both ESRI and Microstation due to expectations of other departments. I've been told that one of our goals is to add an XML string in one of the Features fields for each application that uses the data. This way, when opening the data in Microstation, Microstation knows to symbologize the feature based on the field called "MicrostationSymbology" and ESRI knows to symbologize the feature based on the field called "ESRISymbology."

Keep in mind, those aren't the actual names of the fields.

Well, as a long time database developer, and a fairly recent GIS-er (@ 4 years now), that doesn't sit well with me but I can't articulate why. Do any of the long-timers have any tips? Is this a good practice? Why? Is this a bad practice? Why?

I'm kinda fishing for experience with this because other than working with the data already built like this, I don't have any with XML String Symbologies.

*shrugs*

Thanks in advance.
