Changing the workspace to the parent version in the workspace

Anyone know how to use python to change the workspace in such a way that it just switches from the current version to the parent version - without having to explicitly pass in the name of the parent version? I can't seem to find a way to do this.

I want to be able to count features in the workspace's current version and then switch to the parent version and count the features there. I'd rather not hard-code the name of the parent version. Seems like the code should be able to figure that out. But I haven't seen any examples like this.
