I have two separate polygons that are acting as one

I want to clean my data and remove one of these polygons, but it seems that if I try to remove one of them they both get deleted, I was hoping I can split them. 

I did try using the split tool which got me in even more trouble...

I hope the photo attached will make this clear

And if on the way anyone can recommend  a GIS course style Khan Acadamy I would be grateful

Use Explode tool if you are licensed for it.

Multipart To Singlepart—Data Management toolbox | ArcGIS Desktop first, then delete the one you don't want

Check  the help for "Deleting a part from a multipart feature"; this explains how to do this simply using editing tools, so there should be no licensing issue. I have only used Explode to do this.
