How to Exclude Symbology From the Legend

Quite simply, how do you exclude symbology from the legend within your layout. I am not talking about excluding layers or shapfiles, or symbology that does not appear on the map, just symbols that are extraneous information. Arcmap MUST contain some way of doing this....? 

In this image, the symbols without a description should be excluded from the legend.

You could explode the legend, make your deletions and then regroup the legend items so it is one object that can be moved.  The legend has lost it's live-link to the map so you would need to recreate the legend if symbols change in the future.
