I used the add data button once to add a basemap. i must have faulted with something along the way because since then i haven't been able to do that again. When I click the add data menu, the 'add basemap' option is not selectable same as the online basemaps

• If you are in ArcMap, go to File, Add Data, Add Basemap
• In Pro, go to Map tab, Basemap

Thanks. That is what i keep doing. But the option to add basemap is greyed out. It cannot be selected so is the online resources option.

This goes on in new map documents so that I can no longer choose a basemap

 What version of ArcMap? Does the client have an internet connection?

Besides what BBaldwin-esristaff suggested, do you have an ArcGIS Online Account?  Maybe the account is not working?
