Several sections of lines failing to draw in geometric network

While working in a geometric network, certain areas of a particular layer are failing to draw, with the following error message:

'One or more layers failed to draw:

Unexpected operation'

The features of this layer that fail to draw change depending on what features are in view, as if having a particular feature in view causes features around it to not show up. Any tips or troubleshooting ideas would be much appreciated. I have already tried removing the problem layer and bringing it back in, creating a new geometric network, and creating a new mxd altogether.
