Different symbols in single shape file

I am working on a water system survey. There are only 3 elements we are surveying. Water meters, Water valve, and hydrants.  Is there a way to keep each of these in a single shape file, but display 3 different symbols? I know I can if I put them in 3 different shape files, but would like to see if this can be done in one file.  Maybe this is any easy question, but I am just not that familiar with the software.

If the attributes are in the table, then you can use that information to symbolize your points based on those.

By default, every point is shown as 'single symbol', you want to use 'unique symbol' based on the different classes in your table's field

I don't know how far back to go in help, but there are tutorials in the help topic, but you will at some point land here....
