Isolate a map section over multiple layers for pdf

Hi all,

I am trying to isolate a section of a much larger map for printing. I need to be able to print, for example, this area that is all green, with the information from 4 layers and labelling, without the surrounding areas of the larger map. I have tried creating an extra data frame, but it slows down arcmap so much and i haven't been able to get it to work. I've also tried to select by attribute across all of the layers, however the labelling doesn't work and the layer scales don't really work either.

Data driven pages doesn't work for me because the area is not in a grid shape, some of the areas I need to isolate are oddly shaped and quite close to areas I need to exclude. I really just need to be able to export multiple sections onto a pdf from layout view once.

I have attached an image as an example. I am using ArcGIS for desktop 10.3. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.
