Thanks for your reply. I had a look at the topics you suggested, is there nothing within ArcGIS itself which given a starting point will draw a line perpendicular to a contour, following the steepest path along a surface and then terminate once the surface flattens out? I was hoping to model hydrocarbon migration pathways but it's looking increasingly complicated in ArcGIS.
