Why does Arc simplify two coincident vertices to one when edited?

I'm testing an application that uses vertices to calculate the distance along a line, but requires a start point, end point and intersection point (of another line feature). In some cases the start or end point is coincident with the intersect point - and if the line is edited Arc simplifies the coincident points into one point. It is necessary to keep all three points along this line - but I can't figure out how to preserve this in Arc!
