AD groups integration into Portal not working consistently

I am trying to use our Active Directory groups to control Portal group access. Certain groups seem to work fine, but others do not work, and give an error "Please retype the enterprise group name, or use the Search for Group option to search for and select a valid enterprise group." We cannot find any consistent differences in configuration between groups that work and groups that do not work.
