Hello GIS Friends,

I'm a land planner trying to add acreage totals to my legend that specifies different land use types - residential, commercial, open space, etc...

When creating my legend I'd like to have the ability to automatically populate the sum of acres per each land use type within the legend. It's easy to manually enter acreage amounts when there are only a few land use categories, but when you have 50+ land uses designations that task becomes a little more burdensome.

Any ideas on how to total the sum of an acreage field based on categories or attributes of another field, and show that within the legend???

Thanks,
Brad

I see nothing in the legend tools or with arcpy.mapping that would facilitate math operations.

You could do a summary statistics on the field to produce a small table and include that information or to use it to get the value to add as a text element to your map
