How to add points of interest to 3D Graph

I am very easily able to create a 3D graph using Creating a profile graph from 3D line features—Help | ArcGIS Desktop , however, I need to add points of interest to that graph as well: This is for a road race, and I need to be able to include mile markers, road intersections, etc....as a runner, you'd appreciate that the last hill before the last mile has an elevation gain of 300 feet!

Measuring along the bottom of the graph (distance) is not precise enough, we need to be able to show precisely on the graph, say for example, that mile marker 1 is 17 feet before the crest of a steep hill. Using the Point Profile interactive tool—Help | ArcGIS Desktop doesn't seem to allow you to get the points in order (these are points along a running course that is a loop), nor add them to the same graph as the 3D line.
