Deleted features still visible

I use a .py script to create survey points that fall within specific polygons (cutblocks).   Sometimes it takes a few runs to get the desired number of points.   Each time, previous point features are deleted from SDE using MakeFeatureLayer and DeleteFeatures, then the new point features are Appended to the featureclass in SDE.    My problem is that when viewing the layer in ArcMap, all old versions of these grids are still visible.   Only the most recent one is identifyable or selectable.   They just appear there like phantom elements.    The attached image shows the results after dragging the select tool across the block extent.   Any idea what would cause this?     10.2.2
