how can I insert gps coordinates from excel so that they show up as points

I have coordinates in an excel file and when I transfer them into arcmap I get a message saying that there is no UID for the file. How do I fix this?

Make XY event layer

just make sure your data are in decimal degrees in a numeric field, not degrees minutes seconds or other variants
