script kills attribute table

I have been given a script that is being used in a model. The script works in the model and does what it's supposed to. Unfortunately for some reason after the script runs (either successfully or not) it is no longer possible to open the attribute table the script runs on. This is a serious problem as the model then stops running. The only way to get access to the attribute table again is to quit ArcMap and reopen it.

Has anyone come across this problem or have any idea what's going wrong?

(operating on ArcMap 9.2 and Python 2.4 btw)

Cheers
