what is best website to download free DEM. Have the files gotten any better/faster smaller?
or is the best place still the national map viewer??
thanks a lot
You may find this interesting The National Map: Elevation. It also has a link back to the viewer. Also it can be helpful to look at more local sources depending on your project size. In Alaska there is some data from university projects, state projects, and the BLM. What is your AOI?
Not sure how long ago you used a DEM. But the files are not smaller. In fact, as more higher resolution data becomes available the file size has gone up.
I haven't downloaded one in over a year. I started a new position and am now going to be producing a lot more maps for a utility company. I didn't know if maybe Earth Explorer was a easier to download from or National Map Viewer was still the standard. My AOI is North Carolina & South Carolina. Going to need to download elevation data for each state.
Thanks for your response!
I like the the National Map Viewer for elevation data. I tend to use Earth Explorer when I am looking for Landsat. Sadly I don't have any experience with your part of the country so I cannot point you to any local sources. I hope your new position goes well.
