I know this is a really basic question and I feel almost ashamed to ask but I really need an help.

I had to download some shapefiles from a client and they are in WGS84. I Imported into GIS.

then I bought a chart and Import the chart. Automatically it turned into WGS84 as well even if originally it was in Mercator.

Doing that it looks a bit squeeze, so I changed the projection of the chart and put back into Mercator. Now it looks fine, But I am wondering which is the right way, if I shall leave Mercator or change into WG84. It is not just a problem of how it looks like, but it is also a problem of different measurements. In fact my shp have a different distances between each other if the chart is in WGS84 or in Mercator. Which one is reliable?

Thanks a lot
