Has anyone else encountered this problem and if so how did you resolve the issue?
Have you tried deleted the Normal.mxt template for ArcMap?
For Win7 this is found in :
A new, clean one, is generated next time you start ArcMap.
ExportToPDF—Help | ArcGIS for Desktop or
Exporting to PDF—Help | ArcGIS for Desktop or
Exporting to Production PDF—Help | ArcGIS for Desktop
not quite sure which one exactly
Do you get an error message when this happens? Can you export to other file types?
It doesn't have an error message, just this.

support says my user profile is corrupt! SO.....
Do other exports work?
You can reset your user profile, which may help to solve this issue. Take a look at the instructions here:
