shapefile from utility network analysis

is it possible to create a shapefile fro the utility network analyst tool?  under analysis options, in the results tab, I have a choice of drawings or selection.  I figure if I want a shapefile I need to click selection.  the problem is my color choice is greyed out.  is there something I need to do so the selection option works?

What exactly is the utility network tool?  I see a tool bar, but not a specific tool.

Once you make your selection, just right click on the selected layer and choose Data>Export Data.  This will let you save the selected features as a new shapefile.

the problem is that I can't use the selection option.  it's greyed out.  the only option I have is the drawing option.  nothing is selected when I use that option.
