What are the best job boards for jobs in GIS? Or is it better to use sites such as LinkedIn, Indeed, etc? Thanks in advance.
GIS Jobs Clearinghouse (www.gjc.org) is a great resource for GIS positions. Of course - http://careers.esri.com is another valuable tool as well!
just google gis jobs. What's the best one? The one that lands you a job.
LinkedIn is a joke. My resume on that site is strictly my GIS stuff from the last 17 years.
here is a paste from the Job Recommendation I got from them yesterday.
Job DescriptionForward Air Transportation Services, Inc. is looking for capable and dedicated Solo Owner Operators to partner with our TLX Division. Owner Operators are responsible for the pick-up and delivery of our customers' freight throughout our national network. TLX opportunities are time sensitive, customer to customer deliveries. Drop & hook and scheduled lanes are also available.
I suppose the word LoGIStics was in there an spawned a hit. Last week I had a job to volunteer at Kidstop handing out candy.
Anyway. Make a series of bookmarks. I have bookmarks to all the local counties I would want to work in. Make bookmarks to your State and or any other state agencies job sites. Federal Government as well. There are often some very Smoking GIS jobs for the Feds working on military bases. Learn to customize the searches.
check out this site. It is for cooperatives.
Right now there are 4 good jobs.
check out jobseeker web site and monster.
I have a personal bookmark collection of 36 different hiring agencies.
And lest we forget...the location this thread should be posted GIS Jobs
Not to be condescending, but. Lest we forget the thread you list is for job postings. Not questions on how to find a job
However, there have been the seekers posting there as well
I have had solid luck from indeed. It aggregates from the GIS-only sites like GIS Jobs Clearinghouse and the like. A lot of your companies that have non-GIS employees doing the hiring won't post to such esoteric sites.
While I think LinkedIn is over-hyped, I've landed two solid positions off there. Just keep an up-to-date profile of yourself--don't even have to post specific project work.
After I started at my current job my supervisor encourage us to get on LinkedIn.
We do that in case we are bidding for a job and someone is going to research us and can see our teams qualifications. None of which are GISP.
We use it to stay connected to GIS professionals in our industry, not so much for job searches. And for that it works great. I have many dozens of connections on the from people I have met at conferences and it is a way to quickly go to those people in our specific industry (Electric GIS) and ask questions and connect up for conferences.
I have not actually tried to use it to find a job. But I do have my profile and qualifications filled in and I cannot figure out how it shows me as a truck driver.
Good question. FYI, we've recently completely redesigned and re-launched out Geo Career portal at https://www.geojobs.biz (@geojobsbiz) for the GIS industry. Note, the site is owned and operated and promoted to GISuser.com, Lidarmag.com, and amerisurv.com
Good luck with your search!
