ArcMap 10.0 mxd with SDE direct connections loses all data source connections when opened in ArcMap 10.2.2

Question asked by jcclark2823 on Sep 22, 2015

Hi:

We are currently in a migration project from ArcGIS Server 10.0 to ArcGIS Server 10.3.1.  Therefore, we are upgrading our Desktop from 10.0 to 10.2.2 in order to be able to publish web services to the new 10.3.1 server.

When we try to open a 10.0 mxd that has SDE connections in ArcMap 10.2.2, all the data sources are lost.  Layers in the mxd that previously had joins or relates no longer even have a record of the join or relate, which can cause the symbology and definition query to be lost as well.

I believe that the mxd will not open with the sources successfully found because of the difference between how the SDE connection is handled in 10.0 vs 10.2.2.  In 10.0, you need "sde:oracle11g:/;LOCAL=P112@statoil.no" to do the direct connection and use SSO, but in 10.2.2 you only need the name of the oracle database or its alias (ex P112@statoil.no or GIS_NA).   I thought about the "Set Data Sources" tool in Arc Catalog, but it will only replace file-based sources...

Has anyone else experienced this problem, is it a bug, is there a work-around?

Thanks,

Jonathan Clark
