I am trying to identify icebergs in SAR images and I need to find a good source of wind data to help with interpretation. I have found some in different formats that are difficult to use. Is there anywhere to get .shp files?
Random data? or for some specific area? The only groups that collect wind data that might share or sell would be governments. The coverage would be sparse if the collection was land based. Who have you contacted or where have you looked to facilitate obtaining an answer/suggestion.
My study site is the Chukchi Sea off the coast of Alaska. I have been trying to make sense of the CCMP data (Cross-Calibrated Multi-Platform Ocean Surface Wind Vector L2.5 First-Look SSM/I-F14 Microwave Analyses | PO.DAAC ) that provides information in netCDF format.
After importing the data into raster, I have had difficulty calculating the magnitude and directional vectors from the u (x-direction) and v (y-direction) components. I used band math to calculate them but the scaling does not seem right.
Well the first thing I noticed is that the data are provided in degrees and I suspect that you are expecting planar coordinates to calculate the vectors. I don't know enough about NetCDF, but I assume it can be projected to a useful coordinate system, since Geographic Coordinate Systems are nice to provide simple coverage but not very useful otherwise.
