Hi all, my name is Zdenek, I am a very novice in GIS. Could you, please, give me some general guidelines, how to work with SRTM data in ArcGIS desktop? My target is to create shaded relief and to do some morphometry (slope, aspect, flow lines). Where to go in the help documentation to get quick insight into the matter? Thanks for any suggestions.
Regardless of the data, you want the Spatial Analyst extension
An overview of the Spatial Analyst Toolbox—Help | ArcGIS for Desktop there is some useful stuff mentioned here:
Managing elevation data, Part 1: About elevation data—Help | ArcGIS for Desktop
Managing elevation data, Part 2: Design and data management plan—Help | ArcGIS for Desktop
Managing elevation data, Part 3: Workflow steps—Help | ArcGIS for Desktop
Thank you Dan. However, should not I rather start with 3D Analysts instead?
all tools described are available in both, the descriptions are just better in the spatial analysts, besides you can't do any cool 3D stuff until you get the data converted and processed in its appropriate format...3D is somewhat lacking
