I have a project where I will need to make a custom coordinate system up using metres for an unknown projection/datum. I need to map the interaction of individuals within a number of room spaces in different bulidings. What is the process to create this customised coordinate system?

Thank you in advance.

Hi Craig,

If you're trying to minimize the distance distortions, using just about any projection will work as long as it's customized to the area. One that treats the world as if it's flat is the "Local" projection, but it's doesn't preserve any particular characteristic. Using transverse Mercator would work too, just set the central meridian into your area of use.

I would use WGS84 or whatever GCS is used locally.

Hi Melita,

Transverse Mercator sounds like a good start but I am not sure of where exactly the buildings are located. I have only been supplied with measured drawings of room spaces, so I don’t know what central meridian to set.

I had planned on making a custom coordinate system for say a 20m x 20m area and then map the associated data points.

Craig
