WGS 84 Polygon Shifting

Question asked by Ercarpenter33 on Mar 19, 2015

Hi there,

I'm troubleshooting some discrepancies between intersection results in State Plane and WGS 84.

The intersect was ran when both the polygons and points were same PCS (NAD_1983_HARN_StatePlane_Oregon_North_FIPS_3601_Feet_Intl) or GCS (WGS_1984).

There are enough mismatched values for this to create a problem. Some of the points are anywhere between .001 feet and 800 feet off (when either dataset is projected to the other one).

The biggest problem I've noticed - when you zoom into the StatePlane, it handles 1:1 scale with no problem. However, in WGS_1984 I cannot zoom in past 1:25 without the polygons changing shape or shifting location each time I pan around.

Is this a result of the rendering in ArcMap for WGS_1984 and the precision is fine for analysis? Or is this a function of the GCS?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Thank you,

Emily
