I have a detailed forest plantation shapefile that I would like to extract the outermost boundary from.
any ideas guys?
Is this in ArcGIS? You should be more descriptive and add tags to your question to help us figure out how to help you.
If so, you can run the Dissolve tool on the shapefile without any parameters. This will give you a single polygon.
thanks yes in arcmap
it still doesn't give me what i want but i keep building on that
Are you trying to illustrate the idea behind an ecosystem buffer?
When I have wanted the edges of polygon in the past I have done a negative buffer to the the distance I want, and then did a dissolve/union/erase (depending on what I was doing) that made it so that the smaller polygon was unique or a separate polygon.
This gives you control into how far into the edge you go etc.
I hope this is helpful. I am not sure I understand the question.
Kind Regards, David
someone cretaed a polygon layer by digitizing the different pieces/ parcels of the area. i would like to create a layer from it which just connects the boundary periemeter
Do you want Minimum Bounding Geometry?
Maybe post a screenshot or two to help us understand what you're trying to achieve.
So do you want the outer parcels and only the outer parcels? It might be possible to do this by creating a new geometry along the edge to select by. The negative buffer idea could apply here, but there might be a better way to do it. I agree with Ben, an Illustration would be helpful.
