This is very annoying as I am trying to get to my search results.
Can this please be fixed? Thanks.
I am not aware of any issue with Google links redirecting to the home page. I just tested it logged in and not logged in and the link went directly to the content. Could you please provide an example so that I may test this?
I'm seeing this too, and I second the fact that it's time-consuming and annoying.
It looks like GeoNet is automatically signing us on - the URL fragment shown momentarily contains "SSO" which I presume is single sign-on.
Timothy, perhaps try logging out and then following a link from Google. eg I just clicked on https://www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CB0QFjAA&url=https%3A%2F%2Fgeonet… in Google (the first time I've visited GeoNet today), got the redirect, got annoyed and found this thread
Thanks for the additional information Stephen. I logged out completely and followed the provided link. It went directly to the content without redirecting. I also continued to show being logged out.
I'll look into this issue a little further on my end.
It's occurring for me inconsistently, too.
I captured the URL last time it happened in case this helps: https://community.esri.com/login.jspa?ssologin=true&fragment=&
It just happened again. The scenario is that it's the first time I've visited GeoNet today, after having previously checked the "keep me logged in" option.
Perhaps try searching for something in Google first thing tomorrow, and see if it occurs for you?
A workaround that I have found is, in the brief second that the page is open (before it is redirected), if I can click on the question title, the page will reload and not redirect (hard to explain but try it and see what I mean).
I used to do that. It seems to be working now though.
I too have this problem.
It occurs the first time I go to geonet in a new Firefox session.
I also notice that on the occasions I have to re-login it briefly redirects me back to where I was and then to the homepage. an-oy-ing.
I have experienced this problem too. It also occurs from links in emails sent from GeoNet and when you sign into GeoNet from a specific page within GeoNet.
From example, the link below is from a GeoNet email sent to me.
View the full discussion
If I click on this link (without a browser open) and have a persistent AGOL login (Remember Me), the browser automatically moves through the following pages -
If I sign out and then go to the GeoNet discussion, no forwarding occurs. However, when I sign in from the discussion page itself, I end up at the GeoNet home page taking the same url jumps as listed above.
The issue occurs both in Chrome and Firefox.
Same happens if you leave some pages (tabs) open. The next time you start your browser it will redirect most pages to the login and welcome pages. In some cases you can use the back button to go to the original page, but if you opened the page in a new tab, then you cannot go back to the page you left open. It seems the referrer page is not handled well.
I just got this behaviour from within GeoNet - the search engine link wasn't implicated at all.
I visited GeoNet for the first time in weeks, and was not signed in. I found a thread I wanted to reply to, so I hit the Sign In button.. After being redirected through a whole bunch of URLs, I was dumped back at the GeoNet homepage.
There is definitely something weird going on with the sign-in and redirect process.......
There is a similar problem with the ArcGIS Blog site too!
Like the GeoNet issue, when I click on a link to a blog entry I am taken to the blog homepage. It occurs only when I have been signed-in during a prior browser session. Once WordPress re-authenticates, links to blog entries go directly to the relevant page. (I also get a black WordPress menu bar.)
We are aware of this behavior and are looking into it. The current workaround is to first log into GeoNet, and then click on the links from email, Google. etc.
The thing is this happens when linking into GeoNet from anywhere, including ESRI Support's own pages. Sign in to ESRI Support using global account, search for something, filter by GeoNet results, try to access the relevant page. Global account gets transferred over to GeoNet, authentication occurs. However, after logging in, the page doesn't redirect to the original target - it stays at GeoNet home. Very annoying.
GeoNet's authentication method is very strange anyway. When I link to a GeoNet page that requires you to be signed in, the entire contents of the page flash on the screen (while not signed in!!), then the SSO handoff occurs, then the full page displays again.
Can't wait for a fix. I keep hearing complaints from users in my organization.
Yes, but geonet seems to constantly log me out, like when I close my browser or after only a short period of time, is there any way to make this log-in persistent, or what are the rules that geonet operates on for persistent login 0- keep me logged in, like all ESRI online stuff, seems to do nothing - I'm constantly entering ESRI credentials for arcGIS online, support, etc. even though I click "remember me" or "keep me logged in" am I missing a browser setting or something?
Yep, I use Google to search and find a geonet result, and it redirects to the correct article for a split second, then whatever that service is that rides on top of geonet providing log-in takes over, seems to forget where I was going (the geonet article/blog post/whatever from the Google search), logs me into geonet and takes me to my home page instead of the article.
Then I have to search again in geonet with the same terms I orig had in the Google search to find the article, this is totally annoying, isn't there a way to preserve "where you were going prior to logging into geonet" after you login to geonet? Other websites seem to handle this just fine I don't understand what the issue is, after I login with my credentials I'd like to continue to the article I found thru Google...
One work around that Heonet and ESRI can't stop from working is to view the Google cached version of the pages. Yes it will be out of date but at least it works.
One thing which worked in viewing this page at least was as follows:
I did the above in Google's Chrome browser. Whether these steps are of any help to anyone else I don't know.
Is this a problem that's occurred since the Geonet version of the ESRI discussion forms went live? If it is, perhaps it can be rolled back to an earlier update before the problem occurred, whilst a solution is found. If it's been in existence since the switch over, then one wonders why it wasn't picked up in user testing prior to going live.
Hi Tim - your workaround might function correctly, but using an old snapshot "cached" Google page and subsequently clicking four times including use of the back button is not exactly a "modern" web browsing experience. I can click on a Google result from Walmart and be brought right to the info and a cookie in my browser is active for weeks or more, such that I'm signed in when I arrive.
Considering we're talking here about Google and ESRI, two technology giants, you would expect ESRI to have the web design/technical expertise to correct this behavior with whatever (Jive?) underlying content management system (GeoNet) is running.
Again, it's possible I'm missing a setting somewhere specific to the site somehow, but I see other posts with people describing the exact same problem and no one has suggested any other settings than default related to this issue.
We deployed a fix for the redirect issue last night. Could you please confirm that it is working for you know?
Seems to be working for me.
whooyoo! works on ipad Safari now too! (and IE 9.x) Nice work!
It works in the sense that I'm no longer thrown back to the homepage (thanks!)
But I'm not logged in, even though I've chosen the "stay logged in" option. This is a minor annoyance so if you can't fix that without breaking the redirect, I can live with it
That's funny - I'm still staying logged in even after closing IE, whereas before I would get logged out after only a short while ~15min or so, now I'm able to quit IE entirely and restart it and am still logged in. Maybe there's some hang-up with browsing data, cookies, etc....?
It doesn't work for me! If I start a new browser session with my account signed in and click on the link from an email I am redirected to the home page as before. Below, in order, are the redirected URLS :
When linking to a GeoNet page from a search eng... | GeoNet
If I paste the URL of this thread into a new session same thing happens. If I keep the session open and try again it goes to the thread. Same behavior if i pick up the url via Google.
As I mentioned before, there is a similar issue with the ESRI Blog. It seems like it is a broader implementation issue than just geonet.
You might want to try clearing your browser cache.
As for the blog issue, I have an internal case open.
Clearing the cache worked. I cleared it after posting my reply!
Thanks for the follow up.
Double click on the weblink is a workaround.
+1 for getting the ESRI blog links to work (as mentioned by Darren Kavanagh's modified entry 2/25). This is very frustrating, and trying to search for a particular title is not always as simple or reliable as it should be. this has been an issue since the days of the previous forums too. Any chance for that to happen Timothy Hales ?
This is a known issue with the ArcGIS blogs. And it is bigger than just from Geonet. I am working to have this fixed, but we also have not identified the issue. I will update you all when I know more. Thanks!
I linked to here from e-mail while logged in and I also logged out, selected the link; it sent me to the correct page and then I logged in which directed me to the log in page, but once I was logged in, it took me back to the correct spot.
It appears the fix doesn't work for direct messages sent in Geonet. When I click on the the 'going to the direct message on GeoNet' link I get a web page stating 'Unauthorized Please log in to view what you have requested.'. When I log in I am redirected to the GeoNet home page and not to the message.
Thanks Darren! I'll take a look into this issue.
Sweet! Right from Google>Geonet now, thanks for the fix!
I'm using firefox.
Links from google or geonet emails still redirect me to the homepage.
I cleared the cache.
Have you tried other browsers? This was a global fix, so it should be working for everyone.
Nope, unfortunately Firefox is the only browser my company allows.
Works for me now on firefox 36.0 on win7, wasn't working before though.
Seems to work now, did somethig change or I wonder if it's because I rebooted.
Nothing changed. My guess would be the restart cleared out everything. Glad to hear it is working for you now.
