Collector App Downloaded Map Sync Error

I received a "Sync Error" on multiple iPads when trying to sync a downloaded map:

Sync Error

An error occurred while synchronizing edits.

Unable to synchronize replica.

Sync replica internal error - {56346D83-A111-40FE-949A-0D2EA6151133}.

Edits had been made to a feature service on a single iPad, both the iPad that made the edits and another with the same downloaded map receive the sync error.  The feature class was created in ArcMap 10.2.2 and shared as a service hosted on ArcGIS Online.  There are subtypes, domains and coded values.  Editor tracking is also enabled.

The red circle with the number of features that had been updated disappeared.  I hope the edits didn't disappear too.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions for fixing the error.

Thanks,

Brian

Hi Brian,

I realize it has been awhile since this post but were you able to resolve this issue? What version of collector and what version of iOS are you working with? In addition:

1. How many (roughly) features were collected when the error occurred?

2. Are attachments enabled on the feature services and did you take any photos in the field?

3. What is the geometry type of the service? (point, line, polygon...)

4. Are the features Z or M enabled?

David,

If memory serves:

I believe I started from scratch, sharing my feature class in Desktop as a feature service, recreating the map and downloading it to devices. I don’t remember having issues after that, but it was quite a bit of work to get it back to where it was.

I’m not sure what version of Collector, it would have been the current version at the time of posting. iOS also would have been current (it was prior to 8.0, I’m guessing 7.8 or 7.9).

I only had a few points that I was trying to sync ~6 (since the previous sync). In total, there could have been several hundred in the feature service.

Attachments are enabled, no photos were taken.

Geometry type is point, and it is not Z or M enabled.

This issue occurred to another user on the same iPad model with the same software versions with the same feature service, but they didn’t capture any of the error information. I want to say it occurred 4-5 times over the period of 2 weeks. It also happened when troubleshooting on my Android phone (Moto X). It had the current Collector version and current Android version – 4.4 KitKat (I believe). If I remember, both the iPad and Android phone had the issue within minutes of each other. Both had good cellular reception on different carriers (iPad-Sprint, Moto X-AT&T) at the time.

We’re preparing to collect data for our annual survey now. Is there a more appropriate place to report errors if we encounter any this season?

Thanks,

Brian

Hi Brian,

Thanks for your quick follow up.  So it sounds like recreating the web map and feature services resolved the issue for you?  It also sounds like this was an intermittent issue when syncing the feature service - it did not occur every single time you synced but it was noticeable enough to re-create the feature service?

The following blog post has some good 'best practice' tips for working with syncing data and offline use out in the field.  One thing I have seen that can cause this sync issue to arise is when schema changes occur after the feature service has been published and in between a sync from a mobile device in the field.  Take a look at the 'Map Schemas and Managing Change' section of the following blog post for some additional information:

Collector – Disconnected editing and sync | ArcGIS Blog

You can report any errors you encounter during the upcoming data collection season with Esri Technical Support if you have maintenance available. In addition the user community on GeoNet will commonly suggest additional best practices and share tips on what works in their field collection practices.  As you are probably aware, the Collector for ArcGIS‌ place is a good resource for questions on GeoNet.

Thanks,

David
