Release of SA license automatically

Is there a way to have Arc Map automatically release the SA license when it is closed?

We have a situation where someone does not release Spatial Analyst it when they close ArcMap, and when they open ArcMap again, SA automatically selected w/o the user knowing. A better practice of releasing it before closing ArcMap would be best, but to err is human.

That's the way ArcGIS is designed, unfortunately. I had written an extension for 9.x that would remind users that they have extensions turned on when they start ArcMap (or ArcCatalog, etc). However, since our organization moved over to using OpenLM‌, I didn't update this for ArcGIS 10.x
