GIS has tremendous potential in planning for a more sustainable future: this is therefore one of the main reasons that local authorities all operate a GIS system. The areas of energy, waste and environmental management can all be managed more effectively using GIS.

Your task for this assessment is to develop a strategy for Glasgow City Council that identifies the development opportunities and constraints for either the development of small scale wind/biomass or similar renewable power or the location(s) for a landfill site (topic chosen dependent on stream).

You have been shortlisted by the council to develop the strategy for either waste or energy potential and are asked to base the strategy on the use of GIS. You should therefore structure your report as follows:

Set the scene so it is clear the purpose of the report

Explain what GIS is and why it is suitable for use in developing a landuse strategy

Develop the strategy

You should refer to case studies (i.e.) from journals to back up your strategy and make use of a flow (cartographic) diagram. You should also illustrate the choice of analytical tools you would use – this can be from either IDRISI and/or ArcGIS
