Esri has taken a strong stance in furthering GIS education, but this has led to a wide range of educational materials that teach GIS as Esri products. Many classes are, in a way, simply training for the Esri product range. This leads to graduates not being aware that other technologies exist, or that the concepts taught are not dependent on technology itself. Relative to other forms of education, in which fundamental principles and theories are shared prior to specific applications, GIS is a branded technical training.
How can GIS education focus on concepts, so that graduates have skills that translate beyond the next version of ArcGIS?
