How to tell if two shapefiles overlap?

Hi there, I'd like to create a column in an attributes table which works out if each particular polygon overlaps with a polygon from a particular other shapefile. So for example, I'd have two different shapefiles, one showing areas colonised by a particular plant species and another showing areas where a particular farming method is used. I'd then like to have a column in the attributes table of the plant which will say for each individual polygon whether it overlaps with a polygon for the farming method. Is it possible to do this with ArcGIS? It does seem that almost anything is possible! I've had a look around for an answer but I am fairly new to ArcGIS so I could well be looking in the wrong places, please let me know if that question is unclear. Thanks!your question
