ArcMap 10.1 crashes publishing geoprocessing service or service definition

Suddenly I have been unable to publish geoprocessing services from ArcMap 10.1 to ArcGIS Server 10.1. I have been doing this successfully for months. I have only made minor changes to the python script (something I had done successfully as recently as 2 days before it stopped working.

I have searched the forums and have tried the following fixes which haven't worked:

• Delete staging folders

I don't see any errors when this happens. It gets to the point of creating the service folder and crashes.
