Author/Presenter : Kevin M. Gooss Organization : Timmons Group Inc. 1001 Boulders Parkway Suite 300, Richmond, VA 23225 kevin.gooss@timmons.com Presenter Biography : Mr. Gooss has been active as a Software Engineer in the GIS field for over 15 years with Timmons Group and the Virginia Department of Game & Inland Fisheries. Following undergraduate and Master’s degrees in Biology, Kevin began working on spatial projects for government and private entities focused mainly on conservation and transportation. Although unlikely to readily admit it, he has worked with the ESRI technology stack since the Avenue/AML/ArcIMS era and has extensive knowledge in just about all ESRI-based programming technologies since. Abstract: The previous decade has seen a massive explosion in cloud-based computing technologies such as ESRI’s ArcGIS Online, Amazon’s AWS and Microsoft’s Azure Cloud Computing platforms. These “server-less” environments provide consistent, inexpensive, rapid development solutions that can empower the dissemination of spatial data and analyses with unprecedented efficiency and cost savings. By combining the powerful spatial capabilities of ArcGIS Online with the ease, availability and scalability of cloud-based code hosting solutions such as AWS Lambda and Azure Functions we can build powerful, inexpensive, easily-maintained GIS solutions. This talk will present an example of this “hybrid” ArcGIS Online/Cloud solution to solve a transportation infrastructure problem. The application will combine the spatial resources of ArcGIS Online with the analysis capabilities of a popular cloud-based serverless computing platform. We will discuss how this model can be extended to tackle virtually any issue in a simple, easily maintained computing environment that involves NONE of your own computers.

I think i figured it out. When i was adding the layer to the map in AGOL i was not going all the way down to the index of the layer, just to the featureserver url. When i drilled down to a layered index now i can see the data. But before it was showing the layers, which is a little odd.

that was what i thought initially. i had referenced the layer when i created the map with a local machine name. But i changed it to a publicly accessible url and i am able to get to the rest service endpoint on the phone with a browser. Still not getting that layer though.
