In the Directions portion of the Network Dataset, I am wondering if there is a way to use a single feature class for Landmarks, querying out features by attributes to set at different tolerances. I am trying to avoid having 4 feature classes that I have to use for different tolerances, and consolidate into one. Using 10.1

Thanks for the response, Robert. The information and graphics are useful. I will go ahead and give this a shot, but I think that it might be easier due to the nature of the barriers (multiple floors, multiple buildings) to assign the affected edges with an attribute that can be used as a restriction. This is a helpful workaround if just one building, or one level of barriers, but unfortunately I feel the query would be so lengthy it might be more work that it's worth. Still going to try it out though. Thanks for your continued help on this, we have been making progress. Eric

Here is an idea: 1. run Feature Vertices To Points tool to get thr MID point of the straight line. 2. run Buffer tool on the midpoint with a distance that is slightly smaller than the offset of the curve/arc you wish to create from the line. 3. run Feature Envelope To Polygon on the buffer. You get a square polygon. 4. run Feature Vertices To Points on the square poly with START option to get the point (normally lower-left). 5. run Append tool to add the startpoint to the original points. 6. run Minimum Bounding Geometry with ALL option to create a CIRCLE around the 3 points. 7. run Split Line At Points to split the circle by the original two points; the shorter arc could be what you need. Of course if you can script and know the math, you can follow the logic: - from the midpoint of the line, find a point along the line connecting the midpoint and the intersection of the seemingly x-axis and y-axis. The distance between this point and the midpoint sould be the desired offset of the arc. - then create the shorter arc passing this point and the two input points.

Hi, I am having the same issue. I tried what you said to do above, but I havent been successful in my attempts. I have the junctions in my network, but I am routing withing multiple levels in a building. I have the correct RoadClass attributes associated, but I havent seen any differences in giving turn directions. What do you mean by "this feature must have an arc? - maybe that is my issue. Thanks #directions#turns #routing #RoadClass

Robert, This was incredibly helpful, and what I was looking for. This makes it easier to understand which attributes are necessary to get the NA Campus style to work as it appears it should from the resources.xml file. I'm going to try out these suggestions and hope it all works! Out of curiosity, is there a reason that this information isn't in the resource center or some other place? Thanks again, Eric

Hi Eric, I've used a NA Directions Localization Guide 10 document for the translation purposes some years ago. It does provide a good idea on what all those tags really mean. Try contacting a local Esri rep to see if they could share this with you. Otherwise, I am pretty sure there is no public documentation on this.

Turns out if you want the landmarks to be shown in the directions, you must use the geoprocessing tool found in Arc Toolbox>Network Analyst Tools>Analysis>Directions and set the style to NA Campus. The output directions will have the landmarks included. However now I am tweaking things to see if I can get it not to repeat the same landmark in each segment 4 times.

Jay, I went to the beta resource center forums but it directed me back here. I will try calling tech support. My apologies for the incorrect location of this post. Alex, I will PM you, as to not populate this forum with misplaced information. eric.

Yes, I have seen the routing in a building tutorial and it proved very helpful when I was beginning 3D routing. My question so much isn't how to do it-I have been successful in accomplishing that. I have built 3D networks and created models in order to run route analysis in ArcScene, for Geoprocessing services, and 2D networks that are used in web applications (I don't do the web-based/ArcServer end, just the desktop end). My question is how the application on the web split up the route return based on floor. We want to take a whole route, point A to point B, but have a floor attribute split up the returned route. This is aimed for a web based product where a 3D visualization is not an option, but we want to have control over segments of the route based on floor while maintain the route as a whole.

This is great, thank you Alex. I have begun changing some things and can already see the results in the directions output. I have been having an additional problem regarding getting directions to output in 10.1 beta via model builder or a published service, which I am going to post as a new thread. If you have time and could take a look at that, it would be great! Thanks again, eric. ps. here is the link to the other thread: http://forums.arcgis.com/threads/58732-Directions-in-10.1-not-working-with-ModelBuilder-or-in-a-Network-Service
