Hi Dave, I can see how this behavior is unexpected and misleading--a Support case might be helpful to discover scope, workaround, and details to support review at the engineering level if required. Another option to consider is enhancing your public map with tools focused on highlighting feature count and density using symbology or selection tools. Two possibilities which come to mind are Clustering and the Select Widget in Web App Builder: Select widget—ArcGIS Web AppBuilder | Documentation Configure clustering—ArcGIS Online Help | Documentation The first allows end users to select features by drawing a box around their area of interest. The second symbolizes based on how many features are nearby. There's a helpful clustering visualization at this link: Point clustering - generate suggested configuration | ArcGIS API for JavaScript 4.16 I hope you find these helpful!

Hi Dominik, that's an interesting puzzle. Credentials are not stored in layer files, so we'll have to look around a bit to learn where the authentication is happening. When you log into ArcGIS Online (without the lyr), do you type in a username and a password? Or do you simply click a button and arrive at your content (SAML based organization-specific logins)?

Hi Dominik! If the ArcMap session is signed in to your ArcGIS Online organization, you can expect to see the data. However, if you sign out of your ArcGIS Online organization by clicking File >> Sign Out, and then add the layer file, you will be prompted to authenticate.

Hi Robb! Take a look at this documentation, it may apply to your situation: Author feature services—Documentation (10.3 and 10.3.1) | ArcGIS for Server "If you allow edits on the feature service and the feature service contains feature classes that participate in a geometric network, the feature class data must be in the same projection and coordinate reference system used by the editing client application.
