Hi Angus, yes. Docker 2.1.x can be installed on 2019, but not 2016. For windows 2016, you will have to use a previous 2.0.x version of Docker Desktop for Windows.

Hi Angus, You would need Docker Desktop for Windows (aka CE). Docker Engine is included in Docker Desktop. Simply follow the installation guide here: Install Docker for ArcGIS Notebook Server—ArcGIS Notebook Server Installation Guide (10.7) | ArcGIS Enterprise. It will guide you through the steps for downloading Docker Desktop. Specifically it will ask you to download Docker Desktop from this Docker Hub page. Thanks

Hi Angus, Thank you for this post. You have to use Docker Desktop for Windows for reasons mentioned in my earlier post. Notebook server requires support for Linux containers (Moby Linux VM) and this is available only on Docker Desktop on Windows. Docker Desktop installation includes Docker Engine. Docker Desktop has a version (2.0.x, 2.1.x etc) and the Docker Engine has its version as well (19.x.x) etc. Documentation is referencing the requirements with respect to the engine version that is installed with Docker Desktop. Please let us know if there are any questions. Thanks

Hi Kjell, After login to the machine, if Docker is not started, you can manually start Docker by clicking on "Windows (Start) Menu > Docker Desktop". After Docker starts verify Docker is running as expected using docker version or docker run hello-world commands. Docker Desktop stops running if the install user logs out of the machine. Do not logout, but rather lock the machine to ensure Docker keeps running and Notebooks are accessible. Thanks

Hello, I would like to update/clarify my earlier comment. I was referring to these bare meta l windows instances available in AWS. These instances allow enabling Hyper-V which is a requirement for running Notebook Server on Windows. There is very limited choice for bare metal instances and they are fairly large/expensive machines. Per system requirements for Notebook server, only Ubuntu AWS instances are supported. Please see ArcGIS Notebook Server system requirements—ArcGIS Enterprise system requirements | ArcGIS Enterprise for more info. You can use mixed configuration of ArcGIS Notebook server deployed on Ubuntu with ArcGIS Enterprise on Windows.

Hi Matej, Thanks for this post. ArcGIS Notebook server on Windows requires Docker for Desktop on Windows due to the support needed for running Moby Linux VM. Support for ArcGIS Notebook server with Docker EE on Windows is on the roadmap (post 10.7.1). ArcGIS Notebook server on Linux (RHEL/Ubuntu) is supported with Docker EE. Can you use a physical machine running Windows 2019 for installing ArcGIS Notebook server instead of a VM with nested virtualization? Alternately Notebook server could be installed on Microsoft Azure which supports machines with nested virtualization. Thanks Ravi

Hi Abhijit, Does publishing a service work on this portal? Notebook server creates a notebook item upon opening a notebook and this appears to be failing due to Index service not being available. If you are unable to add an item or publish to Portal, then something is wrong with the configuration (out of disk space?) that needs to addressed before you can use notebooks. Thanks Ravi

Hi Matej, Thank you for this post. ArcGIS Notebook Server currently does not support the use of Docker EE on Windows. We recommend following the steps provided in the install guide for installation of Docker. Welcome to the ArcGIS Notebook Server (Windows) installation guide—ArcGIS Notebook Server Installation Guide (10.7) | … Docker Desktop provides a choice to use Windows containers at the time of installation - do not check that option (step 6 in install guide) Install Docker for ArcGIS Notebook Server—ArcGIS Notebook Server Installation Guide (10.7) | ArcGIS Enterprise Kindly try it out and let us know if there are further questions. Thanks Ravi

Hi Jon, ArcGIS Notebook Server is supported on Microsoft Windows server 2016/2019 and Ubuntu/RHEL Linux OS. The physical machine requirement is applicable to Windows - for supporting Hyper-V. Please see system requirements for more info: ArcGIS Notebook Server system requirements—ArcGIS Enterprise system requirements | ArcGIS Enterprise ArcGIS Notebook Server system requirements—ArcGIS Enterprise system requirements | ArcGIS Enterprise ArcGIS Enterprise on Microsoft Azure 10.7 supports ArcGIS Notebook Server - please see What's new for ArcGIS Enterprise 10.7 on Microsoft Azure—ArcGIS Enterprise | ArcGIS Enterprise . You need to use an instance type that supports nested virtualization. If you are using cloud builder, it will automatically filter the instance size selector. Support for installing Notebook Server using AWS cloud formation templates is not available for ArcGIS Enterprise on Amazon Web Services 10.7. However you can use the setup/installer and manually install and configure Notebook server on AWS. Please note, for Windows on AWS, a bare metal instance should be used*. Thanks Ravi * Please see an updated post further down regarding support for Notebook server on AWS.
