Good day all, Yesterday we came into work to our production server site crashing. We restarted the server service, rebooted the server, no luck. There were all sorts of errors in both the server manager logs beginning at midnight when our server recycles: Failed to initialize service xxxxx, Underlying DBMS error, Method failed HRESULT = 0x80004005 System/publishing tools.GPServer. Never got the thing fully up until last night after multiple reboots, waited a few hours, restarts etc. DB server has no errors. The event viewer application logs on the GIS/web server had a bit more info, but they occurred a few hours after the GIS logs indicated a major issue. We are seeing a tandem of errors that are occurring together within a few seconds of each other. First we see: An unhandled exception occurred and the process was terminated. Application ID: /LM/W3SVC/2/ROOT/arcgis Process ID: 19320 Exception: System.IO.IOException Message: The process cannot access the file 'D:\Sites\MapViewer\arcgis\WebAdaptor.config' because it is being used by another process. Second is: Faulting application name: w3wp.exe, version: 7.5.7601.17514, time stamp: 0x4ce7afa2 Faulting module name: KERNELBASE.dll, version: 6.1.7601.18229, time stamp: 0x51fb1677 Exception code: 0xe0434f4d Fault offset: 0x000000000000940d Faulting process id: 0x4b78 Faulting application start time: 0x01d080fcddbcfaf8 Faulting application path: c:\windows\system32\inetsrv\w3wp.exe Faulting module path: C:\Windows\system32\KERNELBASE.dll Report Id: de1cc55d-ecf3-11e4-8c45-005056895439 Seems as though the web adaptor is misbehaving. Looking back, this has been happening for a few months now even though the server has been stable and very responsive. I wanted to see if anyone has experienced this same problem or had any insight. Of course this is all happening while we are upgrading our beta to 10.3 which has gone fairly well with the exception of the... web adaptor! so needless to say, I'm pretty much done with web adaptor issues, albeit different ones. Perhaps this will just continue on our production 10.1 SP1 environment for the next month until we can upgrade and played no part in our crash. In either case I'd like to get a better understanding of the underlying cause. Cheers,

For what it's worth, the bug and fix that are linked by bubba also worked for our 10.3 web adaptor. Our symptom was that when we would access http://localhost/arcgis/webadaptor in order to configure it to one of our sites, we would get the error listed above. With the exception that our web adaptor is installed in a different directory on \\D. Once full permissions were assigned to the ArcGISWebAdaptorAppPool user to the config file within the web adaptor folder no problems were reported .

from this string. Database Connections\washout.sde\EBISDE.dbo.project_tel_new_vw I replaced Database Connections\\ with C:\\Users\\username\\AppData\\Roaming\\ESRI\\Desktop10.3\\ArcCatalog\\ I did the same for all the features being used by this model as well. It's successful

This was the solution. Thank you Sam. Any ideas if this change is due to 10.3? I'd like to get a better understanding of the underlying cause.

HI Sam, No I have not tried that approach yet. I haven't done much yet, wanted to wait on what the community thought before I started anything new other than re-exporting from 10.3. I will look into your suggestion and report back later. Thank you !!

Whoops, sorry, that would be helpful. I have attached a zip to this entry that contains a script that is now failing in what looks to be the connection to the DB. Thanks in advance!

Yes, this script is being utilized from a Windows Server 2008r2 standard SP 1. Both before the physical move and afterwards. Nothing in the Virtual env. has changed.

I've been digging. IT made a change in that they moved this virtual server to a new physical machine. Is that possibly in play? All variables including the SQL are located on this machine so I can't imagine it is? Otherwise, yes same workflow. Only real change was we went from 10.1 SP1 to 10.3 where I suspect the problem is. Full connection path: ERROR 000732: XY Table: Dataset Database Connections\washout.sde\EBISDE.dbo.project_tel_new_vw does not exist or is not supported

We have a few models that update a point and polygon feature class in our DB a few times a day using a view into our projects DB. We have exported this to py and made a small change "arcpy.env.overwriteOutput = True" and set to run using windows task manager. All good until we moved our beta to 10.3 earlier this week. I realized after a few days that the script was failing in task manager. I ran the script in Idle to see if I could trace the problem. Viola... this is what we see. ExecuteError: Failed to execute. Parameters are not valid. ERROR 000732: XY Table: Dataset Database Connections\inserrtservername.sde\EBISDE.dbo.project_tel_new_vw does not exist or is not supported Failed to execute (MakeXYEventLayer). The view works. I return records when I view in SSMS and Catalog. The model works, and writes new features to the features in the DB. I even deleted my DB connection in catalog, made a new one. Opened the models and re-pointed the GP tools to the view and features hoping this would clear up any mis-matched connection names etc. and export to python. What happened at 10.3 that python is unable to make the DB connection? Seems straight forward, but I'm stumped.

Going into manager and removing the existing web adaptor was in fact the missing piece. I would say that this didn't seem to be very clear in the installation guide. Unregistering should be more discussed a bit more. Thank you

Hi Dennis, We uninstalled the 10.1 adaptor, deleted the virtual directory from our website in IIS and then I renamed the web adaptor folder but left it in the website directory. Figured it was best to leave it but rename it in case it was needed to fall back on or use for troubleshooting. When we uninstall the 10.3 after an unsuccessful attempt, we then delete the ArcGIS web adaptor virtual directory from our IIS site so that when we reinstall allowing us to use the same web adaptor name. We are then deleting the directory that is created on installation in our website directory. So what's left? But clearly we are missing something. I am installing under my account which is an admin. and the installation is on the web server, which in this case is our dev env so the GIS server and SQL are both on the same machine. Our in house developer reports that he does not think the request is even making it to IIS as he can't find even a failed request entry. Does this call for the un-registration of the web adaptor perhaps?

Insight on what scenarios would require one to unregister the web adaptor? I can't seem to find much on this action. We are having issues installing the 10.3 version.

Hi Joe, I put a link in my above post to another thread (Publishing a composite locator- registering data store )where there was some discussion about storing your address locator within the SDE. The general consensus within that thread is that ESRI suggests that we DO NOT store address locators within the SDE. Read the last few posts from the linked thread to see this. Hope this helps you in some regard. Cheers,

I was able to update our model so that after the plot XY from the table view, we are now using the "Copy Features" GP tool to create a copy and have set the spatial reference set to match the projected spatial reference of the feature class that we are appending too. Previously we were appending directly from the temp layer from plotting XY process. After this change the append runs successfully!! *one caveat, we are now seeing a mapped fields issue where the datetime field is not being written to during the append process, but that is for another thread. Curtis: I have not had time to test your solution, so I can't say that it is not the answer to this riddle. It may be. If I get around to testing it out, I will certainly post back here for others. I can see how this would come in use for other projects we have.
