Followup... If I upload the 'bad' (Bathymetry.sd) Service Definition to an ArcGIS Server, yes, it does try (and fail) to spin up a service with M:\IthacaBathymetry\..... as the file path. Here's the error message: The Layer:'1938Contours (in feet)' in Map:'Layers in NAD_1983_StatePlane_New_York_Central_FIPS_3102_Feet' is invalid. The base table definition string "1938Contours" is invalid. The database was not found. Jonathan talks about ESRI '"swizzling" the data paths, but I think all of that occurs while ArcMap is creating the SD. I don't think ArcGIS Server does any of the 'swizzling'. I'm pretty convinced there's a bug in ArcMap causing local paths to appear in SDs even though the user checked the box to include the data. ESRI, please help.

The original one was created by an end-user. The one with relative paths was created by me using the exact steps that I outlined above. I am having a hard time recreating my end-user's SD with absolute paths and I'm trying to figure out how it happened. I can see it happening if they forgot to check the box to 'Include data...', but their data is in there... they must have checked the box.

I uploaded another SD. This one has relative paths. When does ESRI put absolute vs. relative paths in the MSD? It seems like 99.9% of the time, it has relative paths. Is there any rhyme or reason to it?

I've attached a sample Service Definition (SD) file, which exemplifies the problem. This thing bombs when I try to start a service on ArcGIS Server. If I unzip the SD, unzip the .msd, and then look at any of the .xml files, I see that the connection strings to the datasets look like this: DATABASE=M:\IthacaBathymetry\FinalShapefiles\2\cd\finalshapefiles Why is this? These are supposed to be relative paths!! Of course ArcGIS Server is not going to have access to this path and subsequently fail. This seems like a bug in the Service Definition creation process. FYI - to create the Service Definition, I go to: File > Share As > Service > Save a service definition file > click to 'Include data...'. If I click 'Include data...' why would it ever save absolute paths? Is there a bug where sometimes it saves the absolute path even though I included the data? Also FYI -- I've seen this behavior in every version of ArcMap since Service Definition files came into existence.

I get the error: 0x80040154 - Could not create object 'ConfigurationFactory'. I am trying to install ArcGIS Server version 10.2.2 on CentOS release 6.8 (Final). I think I'm missing some packages. Is there a list of required packages for this operating system? Thanks!

We don't use the Web Adapter, so I have a different problem. And yes, /admin/generatetoken/ is available outside the Server network if you want it to be.

Nope, I haven't been able to get this to work. So, the questions remain: 1) Why are there two places to get a token?: https://MyDomain/arcgis/tokens/ https://webserver_domain/arcgis/tokens/ and https://MyDomain/arcgis/admin/generatetoken 2) Why does the first one NOT work (with the above error messages), while the second URL works fine?

Okay, now it's working if I choose 'Request IP' (I was selecting 'HTTP referer' before). Not sure why it doesn't work for 'HTTP referer'. Thanks for the hint, that gets me a little farther.

I'm using ArcGIS Server 10.2.2. I'm seeing the same thing as Carolyn and Jay. Using .../MapServer?token=mytoken takes me to the login page. I then need to login to see the Service. Why are there two places to generate a token?: https://MyDomain/arcgis/admin/generatetoken https://MyDomain/arcgis/tokens/ I can only get the 'admin' one to work for us when using it through the Internet. Both seem to work locally. Any thoughts, ESRI. How do we 'test'.

Thanks for the information. I think it's a good ideas to disable the 'get' token requests. I will probably implement that. However, that doesn't solve my problem of getting the 'post' to work through the REST endpoint. I edited my original post to be more clear. I am using https for all requests.

I'm using ArcGIS Server 10.2.2 on Linux. When I manually request a token from: https://local_machine_name:6080/arcgis/tokens/ It works fine. When I manually request a token from (through web server): https://webserver_domain/arcgis/tokens/ It doesn't work. I get: Invalid request Usage: https://webserver_domain/arcgis/tokens?request=gettoken&username=username&password=password& Usage: https://webserver_domain/arcgis/tokens/generateToken?username=username&password=password& Usage: https://webserver_domain/arcgis/tokens/gettoken.html When I request manually with this URL (note the 'admin'), it works fine (this is through the web server): https://webserver_domain/arcgis/admin/generatetoken/ So, it seems like through the REST endpoint, the 'post' is getting mangled between the web server and the GIS server? Then, through the 'admin' endpoint, the 'post' works fine. Any ideas? One more question.... Why are there two ways to get a token? Is one method preferable?

Looking closer at it... no, it doesn't exist. Strange, when I add the Shapefile widget to an app, it creates a .swf named: ShapeFilesWidget.swf The reference to that .swf is automatically created in config.xml: widgets/Shapefiles/ShapefilesWidget.swf If I change the lowercase 'f' to 'F' in config.xml, everything works. Not sure why it gets generated wrong though.
