Maybe you're missing a step? This is what I do to create watersheds: 1) Fill 2) Flow Direction 3) Flow Accumulation 4) Stream Link [via Raster Calculator: "StreamLink (SetNull (FlowAccumulation < n, FlowAccumulation), FlowDirection)", where n is 1% of max flow accumulation but the smaller the number the more stream segments you'll get] -- results in the StreamNetwork raster that I use in step 5 5) Watershed [via Raster Calculator: "Watershed (FlowDirection, StreamNetwork)"] Janet

Hi All, I want to crop my map in Layout View -- is this possible to do? Because I have graphical text and symbols on the map, I want to be able to take a little off the bottom of my map, without messing up the placement of the graphics. When I have the data frame selected and then drag the middle bottom resize button, the scale stays the same, but the area of my map display changes -- and therefore messes up the graphics. I then have to manually drag the map to try to get it to line up how it was before.... Is there a way to do this without having to manually adjust it? It's a very basic question.... There must be a simple answer that I'm blanking on? Thanks for your thoughts - Janet v10.1 sp1 64-bit

Thank you, Mark! I sort of understand what you're saying.... Instead of a breachline, I tried to just burn in an existing stream. But when I added that stream raster to the DEM, the resulting "burneddem" was just the stream. Hmmm... If I have time, I may try to download ArcHydro and see if I have better luck. I'm just not a hydrologist so I'd need the "Idiot's Guide to ArcHydro".... Thanks again for all your advice - Janet

Thanks, Mark. Is it possible to give parameters to the fill command and tell it not to fill certain cells, or not fill as much? I haven't done what you suggested yet, but it's not clear how to solve the problem, regardless of what I find.... Sorry for being dense.... Janet

Hi All, I've been running some tools from the SA hydrology toolset (NOT ArcHydro) for a variety of areas, to estimate surface runoff flow onto and out from specific parcels. Some areas produce logical flow networks, others produce straight flow lines that are clearly incorrect. I've tried this from both bare earth and hydro-enforced DEMs, and they both do the same thing. My workflow is: - Fill sinks (from .5m DEM) - Flow Direction - Flow Accumulation - Raster Calculator: StreamLink(SetNull(FlowAcc < x, FlowAcc), FlowDir) -- "x" being the cell threshold - Stream to Feature tool for the result from the Raster Calculator Attached is an aerial of a wetland area with the derived stream network overlaid -- the drainages are fairly accurate until they go straight, and then clearly deviate from the actual streams seen in the aerial. Are these errors from my processes, or does this analysis sometimes produce these kinds of results? Has anyone experienced this before? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Janet ps -- I'm using 10.1 SP1

Thanks , Wayne! Maybe at some point I'll try the Python, but I've forgotten everything I've learned so I'm not facile enough with it to test it out right now.

Hi All, I'm trying to create an index of 60+ rasters -- I just want a simple polygon file that shows the outlines of the images so I can see where they are at a glance, rather than having to open each raster. These are all individual .imgs. The only out-of-the-box tools I have found are for mosaics, not for individual files (we already have a composite of the rasters, so I don't want to take the time or network space to create an unnecessary, monstrous mosaic). Is there a non-manual, non-Python way to do this? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks! ps - I can use 10.1 or 9.3.1

Feature Class Representations are probably the way to go -- I believe you have to have ArcEditor or ArcInfo to apply it, though.

Is the spatial join working? If so, you should get census block info for each voter -- then you go into the attribute table of what you joined, sort by census block, select one block, then sort by party and count. There's some manual labor involved, unless you're proficient in python.... If the spatial join isn't working, are you joining in the correct order?

If you're trying to extend an existing polygon, rather than just create an adjacent polygon, you'll need to merge them together after the Auto Complete process (easiest to do this as part of the editing session).

Try the "Split" tool on the Editor toolbar (you have to be in an editing session). If you have your snapping set to the edge of your polygon, it'll split the line it right there. This is how I did it in 9.3.1 -- I don't recall if 9.2 has the same features....

If there isn't any corresponding data that links the two layers (i.e. census block id in the points layer), you could try a spatial join.
