Thanks Dan. We want to avoid adding another field by using Arcade. I thought we could write an Arcade expression to generate numeric values to symbolize on.

We have a feature class that was converted from a shapefile from a 3rd party software. The software can only convert all the data into String type format. In the ArcMap days, our analyst will painstakingly add needed numeric fields before creating a proportional symbol for his report. When we try to use arcade with proportional symbol we immediately run into a problem in ArcGIS Pro (v 2.1.2). When we click on the layer in the TOC > appearance > Symbology > Symbolize by Quantities, we notice this warning immediately - Layer does not contain any field types that can be used to quantify using proportional symbols Even if closing the warning message, the Arcade option remains unavailable. Interestingly, if symbology is changed to Unique Values, there is no warning and I can pick the field to apply Arcade. Any idea?

Thanks to everyone who replied to my question. I also wanted to thank Hayward's GIS coordinator, ESRI's Spatial and 3D analyst software engineers for guiding me. Posting my how to doc for anyone who may encounter similar question. Once the procedure is established, processing and data organization time may take the bulk of the time. Ran this on ArcGIS Pro with 3D and Spatial analyst extensions

Kory, Thanks for writing back. When I got the machine beginning of this year, I ran the requirement check prior to installing Pro. The machine met and exceeded the requirements. I also upgrade my video card drivers at least quarterly from the manufacturer manually. I do fill out the application error report and send it back. Not sure what else I can say because my experience has been the software simply crashes when it try to load my project.

I have been experiencing this way too frequent. Every time when I open a project file (double click on the aprx, or open the software first then select project file), the software always lead me to application error. To get around this problem, I have tried thus far is to find an aprx that would open, then go back and try to open the one I try earlier within the same instance. It does always work. What work the best is to reboot my PC and launch the project soon after the PC comes online. Any recommended workaround besides rebooting or searching for an existing aprx that works? I am running Pro 2.0.1 on window 10 pro 64 bit OS with 4 core 32 GB of RAM. and 4 GB of video card (the latest driver)

Good day James, I ran into similar problem as Alex and I took your advice to run the creation via GP tool. This is the message I got. I am running on 10.41 standard AM license. In my mxd, I have a MrSID layer. I also saw this post which was also initiated by Alex. I am wondering if this is what you were referring to. My alternative is to create a TPK from a raster dataset which worked but the file size was 17Gig vs 5 Gig MrSID layer. Public safety is my primary consumer for the TPK. Appreciate any pointers. Thanks.

Dan - I owe you a clarification. The Figure 1 below is the same area as what's shown on this post above. Figure 1 is a 2D/Ortho view. The black line (not show earlier) is the derived ridgeline. The orange lines are approximation of where the horizontal warped plane would intersect with the ridge 100ft vertically below the ridgeline. The orange line is just a representation that may be incorrect. I merely want to show what the Planners desire to see on paper. From 3D perspective, figure 2, the orange line conform to the hillside terrain. Sorry to keep on repeating, but orange line is what I need for representation but may not be correct in the figures shown below. Does that make sense? Figure 1 2D - orthoview Figure 2 3D

Dan - Thank you. There were many parallel ridgelines. With that said, I can take care of them rather quickly with manual connecting and editing. I need more inputs and guidances on how to chop off the ridges based on the subtracted elevation.

Chris - Thanks for helping again. I should've posted this earlier. I follow these steps to create the ridgelines, but the outcome gets to too granular hence I have to go in and do manual editing.

I am posting this question to the SA Community after I have been working on this on and off. I have yet find a consistent solution and hope someone would share insights to the tools I should look into or methodology that's similar to this case. The problem - To draw polylines or polygons that represent 100ft vertical setback from the ridges (see 2nd screenshot). My study of area is approx 1500 acres. Here is a screen shot. This is what I have done thus far after soliciting help from the 3D forum and nearby GIS expert. Thus far, all is running on ArcGIS Pro with both SA and 3D available. Attempted Method 1: Semi-manually created 3D ridgelines (as shown in black in the screen shot above, and this is not an issue here, let's ignore why the lines have to be manually edited). In Scene, make 2 copies of a ridgelines and duplicate them 100ft vertically down from the original location. The duplicate lines were placed on either side of the ridge while viewing in 3D. Convert the lines to 3D points (Feature Vertices to Point). Then create contour polyline from the 3D points (Add Geometry Attribute then Points to Line). Build a Terrain Dataset, and use Surface Difference tool to create a polygon. The contour polyline was set to hardline. I played with this method twice at the same location with variance in width (meaning how far apart I placed the duplicated lines) but I yield different result depending on how far of the offset lines I placed. Attempted Method 2: Based on Abdullah Anter suggestion from my previous posting. It worked for a small area, but cannot apply to a large area. Because my subtracted ridgeline elevation ranges from 400ft to 1000ft at almost every 10ft interval, using the Contour List essentially create new set of contour of the entire terrain. I could however, convert the new contours to a new raster then intersect the my original and new rasters, but what would be the right tool to create the intersecting lines or areas? Cut/Fill? BTW, I believe this problem can only be done ridgeline by ridgeline, but I welcome any inputs that can shown me otherwise. Any suggestion on how to create a horizontal warped plane from the ridgeline is welcome, too. Here is snapshot what the Planners would like to see, a band that traverse along the hillside. Thank you.

Hi Chris, What are the GP tools that you would suggest to intersect new and existing surface then derive a polygon or polyline from it? The end result our Planner is looking for is a polygon or polyline layer that traverse along the hillsides. FYI, I have are my original raster DEM and new raster DEM that was derived from Ridgeline minus 100ft. Thank you. BTW, I have both 3D and Spatial Analysts extension available. Been working in ArcGIS pro environment.

Good day Chris, Thanks for prompt suggestion. Never thought of subtracting 100ft from the ridgeline. I will give this. I have access to both ArcGIS Pro and Map at Adv level. Thus far, all has been created except the intersecting part. Thanks again.

I am seeking assistance on how to create intersecting polygon(s) that is/are derived from 100ft vertical set back from the ridgeline. Basically, I have been tasked by our Planning Dept. to show deviation of 25% slope, ridgeline, and 100ft vertical set back from the ridgeline of our surround terrain. My dilemma is how to create the vertical 100ft set back and determining the intersecting points and/or polygons on the terrain. Please see attached pic. Hopefully the pic can explain what I need to figure out. Thank you.
