I'm having a very similar issue now. I was using the 3.0 api, but recently started testing on 3.3. For some reason, everything else the same, this error is occurring in the same manner that you state. Did you find a solution? jerry

Thanks for your help and responses guys. Domenico, that bug synopsis seems to state the same problem I'm having. Too bad it's resolved in 10.2; we just upgraded to 10.1. 😞 However, let me explain a bit further: With the setup I initially posted in this thread, users of "User" type are the only ones that cannot see services. "Administrator" or "Publisher" type users from a SQL Identity store can see. However, when I revert back to arcgis server built-in security, the user type can see services as expected. Again, thanks Bubba and Domenico for your help and responses. Let me know if you have any questions or if my additional details spawn any other questions/comments. jerry

We have windows server 2012 std hosting ArcGIS for Server 10.1 sp1 with clients running Win 7 Pro with ArcGIS for Desktop 10.1. In ArcGIS for Server, I've configured security to use the sql server identity store using the admin/rest site to update via json. Now, when I try to "Add ArcGIS Server" connection in ArcCatalog using a valid user of a role type of "User", it will authenticate, but nothing will appear in ArcCatalog. I've verified that the user is associated with the correct role that's used for securing folders/services, but still nothing. I've even used fiddler to track http error messages. This is what I got from Tomcat (Response): ==================== HTTP Status 400 - type Status report message description The request sent by the client was syntactically incorrect (). ==================== My header request was: ==================== POST http://gisdev1:6080/arcgis/services?...lhi7j-gZJTsO0f HTTP/1.1 Accept: */* Content-Type: text/xml SOAPAction: "" Referer: http://www.esri.com/A99CFE30-BD5B-4A...3-984BCBF84E93 User-Agent: ArcGIS Client Using WinInet Host: gisdev1:6080 Content-Length: 332 Connection: Keep-Alive Pragma: no-cache <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?><soap:Envelope xmlns:soap="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:tns="http://www.esri.com/schemas/ArcGIS/10.1"><soap:Body><tns:GetFolders></tns:GetFolders></soap:Body></soap:Envelope> ==================== Can anybody tell me what's going on or what I'm doing wrong? Thanks for the response Domenico. However, pre-sp1, this input field was included in arcgis server manager when selecting security store and also on the web adaptor configuration page. It's kinda odd that it has been removed now. Maybe I'm missing something. Thanks anyway.

What happened to the shared key option when selecting web adaptor as the authentication tier in arcgis manager? Was it removed in service pack 1? I didn't find anything under the "what's new" for service pack 1. Thanks for any help. jerry

Found the source of my problem. More details were posted in a related post here http://forums.arcgis.com/threads/77078-quot-esriags-quot-applicationName-for-sql-server-membership-provider?p=271411&viewfull=1#post271411

I think that it is embedded in code so it binds at applicationName = 'esriags' Thanks for the feedback Domenico. You're right. Yesterday I stumbled upon a file and folder under the default arcgis server installation path (for 10.1 sp1). The path is C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Server\framework\lib\ext. Here you will find 3 files: a single *.soe file and two *.jar files. If you open the .soe archive as a zip, you will find a few folders and files namely a "config.xml" (authored by "shre5185" :)) and AGSMembershipProvider.dll under the "Install" directory. Using a common decompiler, I've managed to locate where the defaults are coming from: There is the "AGSMembershipProvider" namespace which contains the "AGSSqlMembershipProvider" internal class. It inherits the .net "SqlMembershipProvider" and so all it's defaults that could usually be changed in a web.config file like "requiresUniqueEmail" and "minRequiredNonalphanumericCharacters". I've sent in a support ticket because at this point I don't know where to go from here, aside from generating my own "AGSMembershipProvider.dll" file which I'd rather not do.

I have an installation of ArcServer 10.1 SP1 on windows. I've successfully changed the security store to a custom sql server store as per instructions on help docs. I can even create users and roles using either the rest/admin interface or through arcgis/manager. However, by default (as noted in documentation), I'm required to have at least one "non-alphanumeric character" which I'm familiar with in .net *.config files. My problem: I can't seem to change this anywhere. I thought the machine.config or web.config file (under web adaptor app in iis) settings would change this, but to no avail. Question: How can I change this setting ("minRequiredNonalphanumericCharacters") and/or other settings like minimum password length, in the said version of arcgis for server? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Same here. It is not appearing in my customers account either. What's up with that? As per Lee_EOC and theurbanangst problem not finding sp1 download in customer portal, I found a solution to my problem. In my case, my company's customer number was not linked to my global esri account which I created years before I joined my current company. It was a matter of getting permission from my company execs who handle licensing and contacting esri to link up the customer number and global account. Now I can see. Hope this helps. Jerry

So, after doing more research, it seems as if this really is a bug that should be addressed in SP1. From link http://downloads.esri.com/support/downloads/other_/189810.1_SP1_Announcement.pdf: "NIM080829 - Authorization fails if roles are managed in the built-in store and authentication is done by the web adaptor." Hope this helps anyone who might be having same problem.

When setting up security in server manager to use both windows domain and arcgis server built-in roles, no users are allowed access to services if they are setup as a role type of "User". Both "administrator" and "publisher" work, but not "User". The error returned is: Error: User does not have permissions to access this folder. Code: 403 I've setup IIS for windows authentication and disabled everything else. Am I missing something? Or is this a bug. Thanks for any help. Jerry
