Yes, and there should also be the option with group layers to have the members inherit not just scale ranges but also transparency and whether symbology is scaled.

When exporing features using the Identify tool, users are often interested in just one type of geometry, either points, lines or polygons. I know that it would be helpful if the results popup could be limited to just lines for example, when I'm comparing line features with varying attributes, and do not care about other layers that may happen to be visible for reference, such as parcels, utility meters, etc. Also, users will probably seldom want to include visible raster data in the results box, but when they do that's likely the only data they want to identify at a click. We can choose to identify the top layer, visible layers, all layers or specific layers, but wouldn't it be convienient if we could identify only point, line, polygon or raster data apart from the other types?

This can already be accomplished when sketching in an edit session by pressing Ctrl + A. A box pops up where you can enter an arbitrary bearing -just be sure you have already set your units as desired from the Editing Options dialog box, accessible from the Editor toolbar. Alternatively you can have your sketch go parallel or perpendicular to the path of existing line and polygon features.

Just to be clear, are you wanting it for graphic elements in a map layout, or sketching line features in your GIS data?

When going through data from unfamiliar sources, or for users like me with bad memory, it would be helpful if there was some visual cue in the Table of Contents or ArcCatalog pane to indicate a feature class has no records. Would save time having to dig through datasets knowing which have no features, and can be disregarded, or conversely which need to have features brought in or created. Later perhaps a live count of records could be figured into the user interface, but I realize that might take more work from the developers.

I agree -somewhat. Better though to make your own toolbox and paste in your frequently-used tools for easy reference. This is easily done if you open an ArcCatalog pane within ArcGIS Desktop and I'm sure there are how-tos out there to help you get started. Note the difference between 'tools' as in the buttons you push while using ArcGIS Desktop for example (which are in the customizeable user-interface as was already noted in the comments) and 'geoprocessing tools' which go far beyond the range of function in the buttons you find on your user-interface. It would be handy if these 'GP Tools' as they're sometimes called could be sorted by user popularity outside of their individual toolsets; on the other hand there is a search tool that you can use to look specifically for GP tools, and I've never had trouble finding one once I know the correct name for it. An ESRI instructor recommended we create our own user toolboxes and copy/paste in our most frequently used ones; indeed tools can be pasted into geodatabases as well as the table of contents of map projects, with some differences in functionality for the latter.

I haven't found any existing request on this, but please change what the 'home' button means in the ArcCatalog pane of desktop. To this user at least, having the pane open up to the folder where I keep that particular .mxd project is meaningless and useless -why not allow 'Home' to refer to a data folder, or in the case of behaving like a superfluous 'Default Geodatabase' button, remove it and have the catalog pane open to the file location of the top layer in the TOC. Each time I open the ArcCatalog pane with a project open, I have to navigate to the file location(s) of the data in the TOC. Getting tired of this...

This might come in handy; would it also make sense to expand the functionality to turn any selection subset into a definition query, and retain that definition query once you clear selected features?

When viewing the table of contents in the 'List by Source' view, it would only make sense for table joins and relates to be represented by connector lines indicating which table is recieving outside fields, perhaps as this image shows: Users could right-click to remove or modify these data connections, and perhaps even a tool could be created to graphically create joins and relates by clicking directly on the TOC itself.

Currently GP tools are set to run on all records in a feature class, or in the case of any having been selected, the tool will only be performed on those selected features. In the various dialog boxes, it should be possible for ESRI to have them point out when the GP tool is set to run on just a selected subset.

Have you tried working with label styles? You can adjust many variables of labeling and save these to your own user styleset. When I did this with some custom labeling of point features, it preserved the specified angle at which I tilt my labels, along with weighting, fonts, character spacing -everything I had customized. Saves me lots of time re-doing my customizations when working with a new map layer.
