Right, that's the problem. I have different classification schemes for each layer. I've already gone ahead and redone the symbology from scratch, but in the future I will be sure to keep the same symbology from layer to layer. The only problem with that is that then you have an extremely long legend, when you may only have a few of the classes in each layer. Perhaps what I'm using this for is unusual and others don't typically come up against this problem.

OK, please ignore the paragraph below (my original response) I realize now that I completely misread Scott's reply to my question. Yes, I understand now and will take a look at the symbol's properties to see if I can set an angle field. Thank you! OLD: Let me try to restate my question: I use shapefiles with character point features, and a couple of years ago when I first started working with them, I had tried to rotate them, but they would just snap back into place when I let go, so instead I converted to graphics. Then, just recently, for some reason I tried to use the rotate button again, and this time it worked: the points stayed rotated, AND, when I looked at the attribute table, I saw that a value had been placed into the field called rotation (I did not put the values there - they were put there automatically when I rotated the points by hand). So, encouraged by this, I tried to create a new shapefile, and included a field called rotation, and tried to rotate those points, but they did NOT stay rotated and did not automatically put a value into the field. I think I must have just stumbled across a very strange bug, because I swear to you that the points stayed rotated and they had values in a rotation field that I did not enter.

I was able to simply recreate the features in a new shapefile. Still, it's a weird problem, would love to know what the heck happened out of pure curiosity.

Hi Kelly, OK, thanks for the detailed and very informative reply! I will try reducing the scale of the map in order to reduce the number of features. Thanks, Amy

I've been using the Align Edge tool in topology toolbar with success, but all of a sudden it is not working - instead of aligning the edges of two polys, it deletes one of the polys. Anybody have any idea what's going on?

Yes - it actually truncates the digits. Yes, it is long integer, not short.

because arcmap didn't have the 3rd option... just data view and layout view tucked way down at the bottom of the data frame... glad it worked

Thanks Jennifer - there's nothing more to tell at the moment. I will need to get back on ArcGIS (on Friday) and pay attention to the various steps I take before trying to edit to see if I can notice a pattern. I'll report back if I can figure it out.
