I don't think that you have the full functionality of the AGOL account. You won't be able to get the full ArcGIS Online functionality for $5/mo using the PBI Plus account. ArcGIS Online | Pricing would be needed to do the edits and publish FAQ: Can a user with a public account publish hosted feature services to ArcGIS Online? You can also use free tools such as QGIS to make and edit your shapefile. You can convert shapefile to a format which is used by PBI in the shapemap visual, but not the Esri Map Visual. Do you have ArcGIS online for Organizations license? or are you using the free version.

This functionality is available. You can add your own polygon layers or public layers. These are called reference layers when you edit the map. If you log into your AGOL (and users must have also have an AGOL account to view) you can add layers from your organizational account. Then you can symbolize based on an attribute. If you don't have AGOL (I assume you do because you are on this chat) you can also import the shapes into the "shape map" visual, however it will be harder to maintain and less basemap and functionality than the Esri visual.

Hi Scott: Exciting development. I installed the latest release of Power BI. I see Aerials under the "my organization" basemaps tab that do not have a Plus sign. Will these now be available to everyone or just those that sign in with their AGOL credentials. Huge development, great work!

Hi Scott: Thank you for the update. This helps us so much to know where you are heading. We want to be able to provide our clients the correct advise when choosing their BI tool. We've seen some going to Tableau, and one of the things we hear (right or wrong) is that their mapping is superior to Power BI (PBI). I feel that with the introduction of private feature layers it will drive business towards PBI. We'll be able to add features through collector/Survey123 (or other processes), maintain attributes through our various advanced forms solutions and see it all in PBI. PBI has good symbology and basic spatial selection (we always want more options here - select by radius, remove from selection based on another layer, etc). We understand you have priorities. Keep encouraging the dev team, and tell them we're watching for updates and using the tools.

If you mean to change the basemap imagery, that would be a no (see Scotts respose). If you mean have points (from xy coordinates) or polys (from AGOL layer) then you could tie your pictures to a URL in your table. However the source would have to sit on a public server. I haven't found a way of displaying pictures on a site requiring credentials, such as sharepoint. That's limiting because we don't want to publicly share our documents for internal Power BI dashboards. BTW the AGOL is a fairly cheap cloud document storage solution, and if you share globally its as good a place to store docs/photos as any. It's unlikely (though possible) that someone will discover your docs. We use AGOL for attachment storage and link it to features on the map. its a little clunky, because we haven't figured out how to read the REST features directly into Power BI (if that is even possible?), so we synch the table with Sharepoint every so often so that the feature table is available to Power BI and displayed as just xy points on the map (they are polys in AGOL, but we don't want to publicly share them).

AGOL isn't storing any of your tabular data. You can only display publicly shared layers (point, poly, line) as a reference layer. I typically don't include any information on AGOL other than the geometry and an ID, as its public information. There aren't any spatial analysis tools except for select and the map themes (heatmap, color and cluster - if you consider that spatial analysis). There are no proximity tools (buffer, radius based on a selected location). I hope this kind of development is on its way. I also haven't figured out how to connect tabular data to the reference layer as there doesn't seem to be a way of bringing in the layer as a table to PBI from the REST.

I'm able to see the button. (1) What happens if I have the Plus subscription and deploy a map with no plus subscription content to those that do not have Plus subscription? Will they be able to see the map at all? I'm concerned that if I have Plus I will no longer be able to publish maps to those without Plus (currently my entire user base). (2) What happens if I have the Plus subscription and deploy a map with plus subscription content to those that do not have Plus subscription? will they be able to see a default basemap that is not Plus subscription, or will the map will not be available at all? Do we then need to publish two versions of the map, one for those with Plus and one for those without? Thanks,

We're experiencing the same behavior on Power BI Service, though the Power BI Desktop (latest release) is working fine. For now we ware using OSM for the basemap.

PBI can consume publicly shared polygons on AGOL, that's it. It will consume the shape and the attributes. You can tie additional information to a unique ID from inside PBI. You cannot connect only to the table of attributes, you cannot connect to more than one in a single map. You cannot connect to lines. You cannot connect to points. Points must come from your own xy data. If point data is being entered in AGOL, I haven't found a way to bring it in to PBI. You cannot connect to your own server or group permissioned on AGOL, only public data.

Create a data connector to ArcGIS Online feature services from Power BI. This would allow the reading of tabular data from hosted feature services either in public or preferably in organization layers.

Mike: 1. I don't know the why, but I do know the how. You can only select using a reference layer and it can only be a polygon. The reference layer must be publicly accessible layer on AGOL. I wish they would change that so that we can have our own layers hidden from the public, however as long as you can/allowed to publish it publicly you can make it devoid of any attributes (just your own unique ID) and then tie the rest of the data to it from your internal source tables. Essentially the layer is virtually useless for anyone else without any attributes. 2. Points are brought in using XY location and a unique ID from any source. You can then tie to that any set of attributes you'd like and display it in any kind of visual, including a table or matrix. You just need to join the two tables based on the ID, or have all the attributes in your location table. The join is accomplished in the "relationships" tab in power bi desktop (on the far left side bar).
