I think I figured out what was going on. IT guys swore up and down that no previous versions of Arc were on the machines on which we're having the problem. But the python 26 folder and registry entries are there. Finally noticed that Military Analyst 10 was loaded on the machine. My guess is that the extension loads some python 2.6 libraries and the system gets 'confused' as to which one the toolbox should run. Testing now by uninstalling the extension. If that doesn't work, I'm going to have them build a new machine from scratch w/o the extension ever loaded.

If I go into the python window in arcmap or catalog and print the sys.version, it returns that the version is 2.7.5. But on these systems that had 10.0 installed previously, a toolbox with the da module will work sometimes, and other times have a red x over it, with a syntax error stating that it can't import name da. Why does it work sometimes and not others? If I don't have admin rights on the machine, am I SOL?

Is it possible to create a web map service in ArcGIS Server 10.2 that is both a tile cache and dynamic? I want the service to use a tile cache down to a specified scale, then switch to drawing the layer dynamically below that scale. I could have sworn ArcServer was able to do this, but I don't see anyway in the help or when creating a service. Is this possible?

Doesn't the web adaptor give you the option of a portal and a server in the post-install? Why do you want two installs of the web adaptor on one machine?

Alexander, Curtis, Thanks for getting back to me. The error is on machines with 10.2 installed, and I don't plan to use it on any machines with 10.0. I think it's really odd that the toolbox will reference different versions. Alexander, can you tell me more about updating python paths? I think that's what I'm going to need to do. Also, I think I need to uninstall the older version of python. btw Curtis, good to hear from you. I used to work at the St Pete USGS office under Mr. Wertz.

I'm writing a python toolbox (.pyt) and almost every machine it's going to go on has been upgraded from ArcDesktop 10.0 to 10.2.x. There are two python directories on the C: drive, one for 2.6 and one for 2.7 (named Python26 and Python27). Every once in a while the python toolbox will have the red X over it signifying a syntax error, even though I haven't edited it. The error states: AttributeError: 'module' object has no attribute 'da' I'm pretty sure the problem is the toolbox is referring to the older version of python that's still on the computer (and it can't fine the Data Access (da) module in the newer version). Is there any way in the python code itself to specify to use the 2.7 version? I don't have any sort of elevated rights on the machines this will go on. Thanks, Brendan

Does the number of layers in a service make a difference on the performance of the server? For example, if I am serving the same data, does it make a difference if my service has 20 layers or 1500? I have a project where we have 10 to 20 feature classes in a geodatabase, but to view them properly, we need to put query definitions on them to break it up. The resulting map can have anywhere from 900 to 1500 layers. I have two options: 1) I can put those query definitions in an mxd and create a service out of it (1500 layers). OR 2) I can serve the feature classes as layers w/ no query definition (20 layers) and put the query definitions on a web app. All things being equal, does it make a difference performance either way?

Jake, Thanks for responding. I ended up using the append tool instead. The idea is that another department posts an excel file online and we want to update a feature class with the new data. We want to completely replace the existing records with the new data. So I am using the delete rows tool then the append tool instead of opening an edit session with a data access cursor.

I have a versioned feature class in sde that is the source of a map service. I can open the feature class in arc map, start an edit session, make edits and save those edits. However, if I try to start an edit session in an arcpy script I get a schema lock. I'm using the same user and sde connection file. Shouldn't I be able to edit this feature class in arcpy?

We are running Server 10.1 on IIS 7 and Windows 2008 R2. Everything is on one machine. Getting an error using some javascript apps that states: "esri.config.defaults.io.proxyurl is not set." So I need a proxy, I gather. If we install the Web Adaptor, do we also have to install the proxy page? From what I understand, the web adaptor is a proxy to the internal apache server. Does it replace the proxy as described below? https://developers.arcgis.com/javascript/jshelp/ags_proxy.html Thanks

The behavior you described is also something we experienced. If the GIS service you are trying to access does not respond over SSL, then you cannot utilize it in Portal for ArcGIS. Some services, however, respond to HTTP and HTTPS. Below is an example: http://server.arcgisonline.com/ArcGIS/rest/services/ESRI_StreetMap_World_2D/MapServer https://server.arcgisonline.com/ArcGIS/rest/services/ESRI_StreetMap_World_2D/MapServer Both URLs resolve; one over port 80 and the other over port 443. One thing I had thought about was attempting to use the IIS Redirect Module for IIS 7 to see if perhaps HTTPS URLs could be re-directed to HTTP in order to "trick" Portal for ArcGIS. I've not tried this, but it might work. Assuming you're using Windows. Thanks for replying. We're on windows/iis. We were thinking of something along the same lines, trying to spoof an https service on our end, but didn't know how to go about it. I'll check out the redirect module. Some odd behavior I've seen: We use a copy of the esri road map service as the default basemap and also use the same service listed as a separate basemap named Street Map. With ssl only enabled, it will display the default map. But it will not allow the street map if you try to switch to it, giving the warning listed in my earlier post. Odd...

The error message when I try to add a non-secure basemap states: "Notice, This portal is configured to require that only urls accessed over HTTPS can be added." For user authentication, we have to allow only SSL. But not being able to bring in non secure services seriously degrades the utitlity of the portal. There's got to be a way to do this, right?

We are running portal 10.2.2. When we enable security by checking the "Allow access to the portal through SSL only" checkbox we are not able to bring in outside services that aren't using ssl. For example, if I want to use a service for my basemap from esri: http://services.arcgisonline.com/ArcGIS/rest/services/World_Imagery/MapServer Portal will give me an error stating that the site is configured to only use SSL connections (paraphrasing). Is there a way to allow it to bring in non-SSL data while having the SSL only check box checked?
