Having a bit of trouble understanding exactly what is the problem. Is the "parking" line class being ignored in the output route? Or is it not actually routing to the parking spot? Do you have any illustrations? I just was working with doing something similar to this so I might have a couple of ideas if I can wrap my brain around the issue. eric.

Hello, I have been trying to implement the landmark functionality into route solving in Network Analyst using 10.1. I have added a point class as turn landmarks (as well as playing around with confirmation landmarks as well), verified they have a valid name field, and adjusted the tolerance, yet the landmarks are not showing up in the directions. Am I missing something? Thanks, Eric

This might help a bit. If you create a restriction evaluator, and then set the Type to "Field", you can enter an expression (the little hand holding the paper on the right) to restrict the attribute you desire. The expression is this: restricted = False If [RoadClass] = "2" Then restricted = True End If value = restricted Where the bracketed is whatever your road class field is called, and "2" is whatever attribute you want restricted. The value goes in the separate value box below the VB code box. After you rebuild the network dataset, you should have an option to use restrictions when routing. Hope this also helps. eric

Jackie, I did something like this a while ago to gauge pedestrian flow throughout a network, but it was finding which individual segments of my total closest facility analysis contained all the different routes that traversed it. I'll explain my process below, and hopefully it will help you with yours. Once I had my output feature class of all routes, I intersected it on itself. This split up each individual route into a series of segments and retained the original name of the route (the origin and the destination). Then, in the resulting feature class, I created three fields (double), an X midpoint, a Y midpoint, and an X endpoint. I calculate each of these geometries, then concatenated them using Field calculator into one field. This created a unique ID for each segment, as there were many stacked on top of one another if multiple routes traversed a single segment. From here I used this script: http://resources.arcgis.com/gallery/file/geoprocessing/details?entryID=F3368746-1422-2418-A061-D00793D7F9F0 to concatenate the identical values into a field, and then deleted the repeating identical entries using the Delete Identical tool. My resulting feature class had a single set of segments that had an attribute with all of the routes that traversed that individual segment. I hope this helps, and in the mean time I will think how you can alter something like this to fit your specific project. Eric

Jay, I went to the beta resource center forums but it directed me back here. I will try calling tech support. My apologies for the incorrect location of this post. Alex, I will PM you, as to not populate this forum with misplaced information. eric.

I am having an issue getting directions to return when using ModelBuilder or through a network service with ArcGIS server. In 10.1 desktop the directions work fine, and return in the directions window. Also, The model that I made works in 10, and without the directions it works in 10.1. When the directions are set to not return (as false) in the network service a route is returned as well. But when in 10.1 both the model version of the route solve with directions as well as the network service return error 030020: failed to generate directions. Solve required prior to generating directions". Is this some sort of bug, or am I missing something? Thanks, Eric

This is great, thank you Alex. I have begun changing some things and can already see the results in the directions output. I have been having an additional problem regarding getting directions to output in 10.1 beta via model builder or a published service, which I am going to post as a new thread. If you have time and could take a look at that, it would be great! Thanks again, eric. ps. here is the link to the other thread: http://forums.arcgis.com/threads/58732-Directions-in-10.1-not-working-with-ModelBuilder-or-in-a-Network-Service

Thanks Alex, I've taken a look at the XML file, but I'll admit it is a bit difficult for me to figure out what exactly I should change. Do you think you could give me an example of say, changing "Ramp" to "Stairs"? Eric

Yes, I have seen the routing in a building tutorial and it proved very helpful when I was beginning 3D routing. My question so much isn't how to do it-I have been successful in accomplishing that. I have built 3D networks and created models in order to run route analysis in ArcScene, for Geoprocessing services, and 2D networks that are used in web applications (I don't do the web-based/ArcServer end, just the desktop end). My question is how the application on the web split up the route return based on floor. We want to take a whole route, point A to point B, but have a floor attribute split up the returned route. This is aimed for a web based product where a 3D visualization is not an option, but we want to have control over segments of the route based on floor while maintain the route as a whole.

I have been wondering this for a while, and have tried to figure it out but can't seem to get it. The User Conference had a site last summer where one could route inside the San Diego Convention Center through multiple floors. Is there a functionality built in to Network Analyst that allows for splitting up of a route return based on a particular attribute (floor, for example), or was this some sort of work around? We are trying to do a similar thing using Network Analyst to route interiors that will eventually be going to web, and it would be very helpful to know how this was accomplished. Thanks, Eric

Thanks, Alex. Looking at the link you provided, I noticed that under the "Road Detail" section of Setting Directions the field mappings appear to be of an internal building. Do you know if the directions will be more accommodating to walking networks in 10.1? Or if they will offer some sort of work-around? I posted a question in the forums about it a little while ago: http://forums.arcgis.com/threads/56953-Altering-RoadClass-Driving-Directions-for-Walking-Network Thanks, Eric

Have you checked the TIGER/Line files yet? I am not sure if they have speed limits, but it's worth a shot. You can navigate to them from here I believe: http://www.census.gov/geo/www/tiger/shp.html EDIT: TIGER/Line data does not contain speed limits. Mike Price has an explanation of the data (at least Census 2000) here, from a 2009 issue of ArcUser: http://www.esri.com/news/arcuser/1009/networkstreets.html. In the article he states that "The Census Feature Class Code (CFCC) may be joined to the streets to obtain typical speeds." I'd give that a shot. eric.

I was wondering if there is a way to use a set of landmarks (in a point class or something) that will be included in the directions output for a Network Analyst route. So if there is a point (or building polygon for that matter) at a corner, the text would read "Turn right at 7-11, on to ___________". I found this thread: http://forums.arcgis.com/threads/35424-Displaying-point-features-as-landmarks-on-Network-Analysis-route-direction-maps , but I don't necessarily want to attribute my route paths with building information, which is what I gathered this was doing. Any suggestions? Thanks, eric

Thanks, Jay. It appears to have been running out of memory. I did not have a hierarchy established, as all of the paths are of the same relative importance because it's a walking network. I was doing some processing after this initial step that required all to be done at once, so I could not do it in parts, either. In all, the area is only around .5 square miles. I ended up finding the limit to how many incidents and facilities I could solve, and selectively chose the most important for the task.
