I had tried the export just to see and they still weren't there. The phantom images I was getting in the corner of the screen disappeared on export. Project finished!

Thanks, Chris. The issue seemed to be because I added a frame and background to the group. I removed the background and just grouped the text and marker symbol with a rectangle graphic. It's an easy enough workaround, but it is still sort of strange that it disappeared! It all turned out in the end!

I am having an issue with my graphics/text in data view. I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem. Please see the images below. I had made 2 groups of text and marker symbols like the 'Do Not Enter' one in the first image below. I made them by creating a multi-layer marker symbol, creating text, and then grouping them together and adding a frame and background. When I zoomed in on them in Data View, the frame would look like this: It appears just fine in Layout View. Next, I tried rotating the Data Frame. Only those grouped graphics disappeared (the callout boxes and text remained). I rotated the Data Frame back to 0 and the graphics did not re-appear. I noticed them hovering in the upper left-hand corner of my screen. I tried panning and zooming, but they kept appearing in the upper-left hand corner. I did a refresh, thinking they'd probably disappear but they didn't. I ran it through MXD Doctor and still no graphics. I only have one Annotation Group in the Data Frame and it is turned on. Where did they go? How do I get them back?

Hi Ryan, I had the same issue a while back. At the time I was using 9.3. I think I used ET-GeoWizards (don't quote me on that) instead of the built-in ArcGIS conversion tool. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like that converter is offered for free anymore. Have you tried online conversion services to see if you fare any better with them?

Thanks! Unfortunately that didn't work for my problem. On or Off, ArcMap is still looking for the missing data sources. The solutionMindaugas Rasiukevicius had (and the one I was given by esri) seems to work the best. That's a handy tool, though. I definitely can use it with other documents!

Thanks! See my comment below for the work-around esri gave me. The issue wasn't with what version the the MXD was in; it was with the broken data sources.

I've never used the Data Frames Toolbar. That's way faster than my method!

You can rotate each data frame to whichever direction you want. Right-Click on the data frame and select Properties... Select the General Tab and type the rotation you want (I typed in 180 to turn it so South is at the top of the frame)

I think I understand what you're trying to say. Forgive me if I'm wrong! Have you tried using a Definition Query on the Campground Labels point layer? Your query would be something like Status = Placed. That should hide the points as well as the annotation.

Yes, that is the easiest and most obvious solution, which I had already tried. It didn't matter if it was a 9.3 or a 10.2 document, it would take forever to open in ArcMap, or to bring up the data sources when right-clicking in Catalog. The issue was with the data sources; SDE had been moved and renamed when we upgraded to 10.2. The MXDs had previously opened easily in 9.3 but would open very slowly (or not at all) in 10.2. I experimented with saving the MXDs in 10.2 and NOT repairing the data sources - the issue remained. This was the work-around esri gave me for the problem.

I got a pretty easy work-around from esri. I copy the MXDs to my desktop, disconnect from my network and the internet (Network and Sharing Center in Windows 7), open the file (it took less than 30 sec), then re-connect to the internet and my network, fix all the broken links and save it to its original location. It was MUCH faster than waiting for the mxd to open or trying to fix the broken links in Catalog.

I know this is an old thread, but I thought I'd add my two cents. I used a free vector graphics program called Inkscape (which can also read AI files) to create my own svg symbol font and then used a free online font converter to convert it to TTF. It worked pretty well! Here is a tutorial on making fonts in Inkscape: Make a dingbat font with Inkscape | Clever Someday I found that the symbol editor in ArcMap didn't quite get me the look I wanted for any symbols with layers. There were often alignment problems. My next step was to convert the symbols into a cartographic representation. Cartographic representations are much easier to refine. They looked great. I'm finding now that I want to add more symbols to my Representations and would like to directly import vector graphics from Inkscape. Anyone know if there is a way to do that?

Thanks! I will definitely give that a try. Unfortunately, Esri support hasn't been very helpful with this.
